Installation & Configuration

Installation Notes

The following information describes the installation and configuration for assistive computer technology software, basic computer applications, web-based applications, and alternate media applications on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system. If you have questions about the installation order or configuration of any of the software applications, please contact the High Tech Center Training Unit. Under each heading, the software titles are presented in the order of installation. Special notes are presented following the software application that describe what modifications were necessary in order to run the software applications under Restricted User privileges.

This document covers the installation/configuration of:

During installation:

  • Installation of each application was under the Administrative profile.
  • Following the installation of each application, the program was initially run under the Administrative profile.
  • All computer virus checkers were disabled for the installation.
  • Computer was restarted when prompted by Windows XP.

Hardware:

  • Dell Optiplex GX 240
  • 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 Processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 80 GB Hard Disk Drive
  • ATI Ultra 128 or ATI Radeon 7500 Video Card
  • SoundBlaster Live Sound Card
  • Flat-Panel display

Operating System:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 (with all Critical Updates from Microsoft)

    • Requires restart of software application to complete registration of software program. Follow directions in manual to complete registration.

Assistive Computer Technology:

Note: Computers that have both ZoomText 8.1x and Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 might not work correctly under Power User settings. See workaround.

Note:  It is highly recommended to install only the latest versions of JAWS for Windows, ZoomText, and Window-Eyes due to the use of DCM (Display Chain Management) technology.
